It’s a London Thing No.2: Hornets

It’s a London Thing is our new Wednesday series in which we turn the spotlight on a unique aspect of London – perhaps a curious shop, sometimes an eccentric restaurant, a hidden place, book or oddity. The subject matter will be different every week. The running theme, however, will remain constant: you have to come to London to enjoy it. It’s A London Thing.

There’s an old real estate cliché on the three most important factors in the value of a property: “Location, Location, Location”. If this is in any way true, then the gentlemen’s outfitter Hornets of Kensington is priceless thrice over.

Location first. Based in peaceful and picturesque Church Walk (where the cherry blossom in spring is a picture) in the effortlessly chic urban village of Kensington, a visit to Hornets is a must for any style aficionado.

Next, their stock and staff. With their motto “Not Fashion: Style” and their peerless stock of vintage bespoke, this fine shop is a London original. “Come and see us,” says Bill Hornets on his website, “we’re very easy going.” And indeed a warm welcome is guaranteed, a million miles from the commercial obsequiousness of the High Street chain stores just a few yards away.

From the sedately respectable to the wildly outré, a visit to Hornets always throws up a surprise. The finest little gentlemen’s outfitter in all the land? Damned close. And best of all, one can’t pop in to their New York branch, or their Milan or Paris branch. One can get a flavour of what they’re all about at their blog, The Hornet. But ultimately, one must come to Kensington to experience this unique haven for stylish gents. It’s a London Thing.

Hornets, 2 & 4 Kensington Church Walk , London W8 4NB and also at 36b Kensington Church Street , London W8 4BX. See Hornets on the Kensington Walk every Thursday & Saturday at 2pm.

  1. Finds like Hornets are the icing on the London Walks' cake. Unlikely I'd have stumbled across Hornets on my own, but once introduced I was delighted. Back I went to buy coats, caps, scarves, and bask in the eccentricity of the shop.
