Women first competed at Wimbledon in 1884. Maud Watson was the winner of the inaugural ladies’ singles. Miss Watson honed her game by playing against male opposition - mainly undergraduates who were cramming for exams with her vicar father.
Since 2007 women’s prize money at Wimbledon has been equal to that of men’s.
