On This Day In Rock'n'Roll London History…
U2 make their UK debut at The Hope &
Anchor in Islington…
… playing to nine people and mis-billed as
"The U2s". Edge breaks a string and the gig ends early. Next night –
billed at V2 (!) – the band played the Rock Garden in Covent Garden.
Here's how they looked and sounded way back
then. Warning: this vid contains shots of The Edge with hair…
A London Walk costs £10 – £8 concession. To join a London Walk, simply meet your guide at the designated tube station at the appointed time. Details of all London Walks can be found at www.walks.com.

The Rock Garden gig was supporting a girl group called Dolly Mixture - whom I saw scores of times live. I was at that gig - but went to a local pub rather than seeing the support band. I got to the gig just as U2 were leaving the stage! A chance missed!
