Every Sunday we’ll pluck just one walk from the vast London Walks repertoire and put it centre stage.
You can check out the full schedule at www.walks.com.
But if you only
take one walking tour this week, why not make it…
The Monstrous Regiment – The Fight For Women's Suffrage
St James's Park Tube – Broadway/Westminster Abbey exit
Sunday 24th July 2016 10:45a.m
Led by Kim
What a story. What human beings. What a walk.
When you look at them (statues and seeing them in your
mind's eye) and go over the ground, see where some of the pitched battles were
fought, and get a sense, with a shudder, how they were vilified - the word vile
is hardly strong enough - you'll be lost in admiration.
Some of it hardly bears thinking about - how they
force fed Emmeline Pankhurst in prison, for example. All of it is gripping:
death, firebombing, police wading in with billy clubs, tremendous person cost -
families torn apart, for example, the world's most beautiful woman attacked
with a knife, astonishing bravery, even Dickens' house.
Anything else? Yes, best possible guide for this one
("London Walks puts you into the hands of an expert on the particular area
and topic of a tour" The New York Times): Kim. She worked in Parliament a
good few years. A star Blue Badge Guide, she won the big one, the Guide of the
Year Award in her year.
