Actress, favourite of Charles II, dubbed "pretty, witty Nell" by Sameul Pepys, Nell Gwynne is believed to have been born in the parish of St Martin-in-the-Fields in 1650. It should be noted that Hereford and Oxford also slug it out to be known as her birthplace.

Her life has become the stuff of gossipy legend but her natural wit (commented upon not only by Pepys but by John Dryden) brought her fame as an actress in the Restoration Comedies of the 1660s
Find her plaque at 80 Pall Mall…
