Nicholas Saunders is held to be the founding father of "aternative Covent Garden". When the fruit and veg market moved away, Saunders moved into a warehouse in Neal's Yard and opened a (then rare) wholefood shop. Today Neal's Yard is the go to destination for wholefoods and herbal remedies in the West End.

Saunders also researched, wrote and designed the cover for Alternative London (first published in 1970) a guide with tips for those who wanted to live "off grid" in the capital…
His plaque can be found in Neal's Yard…
