I'm very excited to be launching a brand new walking tour at the start of a new year – tomorrow is the world premiere of Musical Covent Garden (Covent Garden Tube 2.30pm).
This morning I put the finishing touches to the playlist. And as my 12-year-old says, I ain't gonna lie (tweenspeak for "to be frank") I think it's a bit mad. Maybe too much so…
Eclecticism is one thing. But a tour that goes from Dame Nellie Melba to The Smiths via Thomas Arne and Bob Marley is maybe a step too far. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it goes.
Received wisdom is that such events should have a "hook" or a clear "brand", The Beatles In London for example, or Handel & Royal Pageantry (both of those tours are in my repertoire).
So I'm looking forward to seeing how many of you are intrigued enough by a title that suggests that we'll get into the musical DNA of an entire neighbourhood and make a no-chords-barred romp from folk to opera calling in at punk and baroque along the way.
I'm excited – I'm pretty sure there are enough of you out there who appreciate all kinds of music.
Later on this year I'll be launching Musical Kensington and Musical Marylebone to further out the idea to the test!
Can a tour be TOO eclectic? What areas of London would you like to see covered by a new music tour? Which composers/bands/acts would make a great tour? Get in touch!
